College journalism educators are an important part of the Newspaper Fund's success. They serve as directors of our summer workshops for high school students, they act as monitors for our internship exams, they provide references for students and, most of all, they teach the skills students need to compete and excel in the newsroom.
The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund offers annual summer internships in business reporting, newspaper copy editing and sports copy editing. With support from Yahoo! News, the Fund will offer 12 online editing internships. Each program provides free pre-internship training seminars on college campuses and weekly salaries starting at $350 for a minimum of 10 weeks. Interns who return to college full-time the following fall will receive $1,000 scholarships from the Fund. The application postmark deadline is Nov. 1.
Some participating news organizations: The Wall Street Journal; The Associated iqoption.com Press; Reno Gazette-Journal; The Star Tribune; The Tennessean; The Denver Post; San Jose Mercury News; The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle; The New York Times; The Washington Post; Detroit Free Press; Philadelphia Inquirer; The Hartford Courant; The Standard-Times.
To volunteer to serve as a monitor for the Controlled Editing Exercise which is part of the application process, click on the Monitors tab in the menu at the left.
Students can study for the exam and brush up on their skills using past versions and the answer keys at Ohio professor Deborah Gump's Web site, EditTeach.org. The site is also a resource and forum for editing professors and others who care about the craft.
The separate business reporting test should be completed no later than Dec. 1, 2006. Students must have designated a professor to receive and administer the test on the application form. A practice test is available on this site by clicking here. Check your answers when you're finished by reviewing the key.
